Huntington Learning Center Launches 2017 Summer Reading Adventure Program Its summer break, which also means it is time for Huntington Learning Centers annual summer reading program, Reading Adventure. Students select books from Huntingtons carefully formulated book lists that offer a range of choices by grade level and reading ability. They then record what they read in their reading passport, sharing their assessment and opinions about each book. The program is intended to introduce children to high-interest reading material and get them excited about reading. Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center says that reading is one of the easiest ways to minimize regression over the long summer break from school and help children discover the joy of reading. Our Reading Adventure program fosters a love of learning by helping children discover how much fun reading can be, she says. We know from experience that children become stronger readers through regular practice. With its more relaxed pace, summer is a perfect opportunity for parents to help their children develop a daily reading habit. The more they read, the more they will enjoy itand become better readers. What Is the Connection Between ADHD Medications and Sleep Problems Kids with ADHD often struggle with falling asleep and staying asleep. Studies have shown that kids with ADHD have higher rates of sleep disorders, like sleep-disordered breathing or restless leg syndrome, and experience more daytime sleepiness than kids without ADHD. Many parents worry that giving their child a stimulant medication, like Concerta, Focalin, Ritalin, or Adderall, to treat their ADHD symptoms will only make sleep problems worse or cause new sleep problems for a child who hasnt had difficulty with sleep up to this point. For decades, there have been conflicting opinions and research findings about whether ADHD medications cause sleep problems for kids with ADHD. Some professionals have suggested that stimulant medications can ultimately improve sleep for some kids with ADHD. Others have suggested that stimulant medications dont cause sleep problems in ADHD, but they make sleep difficulties worse in kids who already experience a secondary sleep disorder. The most definitive answer to the question came from a large study published in Pediatrics in 2015.1 This study pooled data from seven smaller studies in an effort to draw more definitive conclusions. Ultimately, the 2015 paper concludes that stimulant medications do result in sleep problems for some children. In their results, the exact percentage of children experiencing sleep problems was different based on the medication they were taking. As one example, about 20% of kids taking Ritalin experienced greater difficulty falling asleep. However, no single medication caused significantly worse sleep problems than the others. There were a couple of individual factors that helped explain why some kids were experiencing sleep problems while others were not. First, kids who took ADHD medications multiple times throughout the day, rather than once in the morning, were more likely to experience sleep difficulties. This is likely because kids who took multiple doses still had stimulant medication in their system while they were trying to sleep. As a possible solution, the study authors recommend trying a single extended-release dose in the morning as an alternative to multiple doses. For kids who already take an extended-release formulation but also take a booster dose later in the afternoon, the researchers suggest talking with the prescribing doctor about the timing and duration of the booster medication. A second factor that influenced sleep problems was the number of days the child had been taking the medication during the study period. Kids who had been taking ADHD medication longer experienced sleep problems that were less severe than kids who only began taking the medication recently. The authors suggest its possible that a childs body adjusts to the medication over time, and sleep problems may gradually improve. In addition to these factors, its well known that medications affect each child differently, and while one medication may cause sleep problems, its possible that another stimulant medication would come with fewer side effects. So, there are many ways that your childs pediatrician or psychiatrist may be able to help find a medication and dosing schedule that works for your child. Stimulant medications for ADHD can be very effective for treating ADHD symptoms like inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity when they are used alone or in combination with behavioral interventions. They are a first-line treatment for many kids with ADHD or a second-line treatment for kids who dont respond to behavioral interventions alone. However, medications do come with the potential for side effects, and all parents have to weigh the pros and cons when making the decision to add medication to a childs ADHD treatment plan. ABOUT DR. AP US History Decoding the Textbook - TutorNerds Tips From an Irvine AP Tutor: AP US History: Decoding the Textbook Students preparing for their AP US History class in the fall will find a very thick and in-depth textbook at their desk. Although US History only covers events from the period leading up to the Revolutionary War to current, the course is much more intricate than AP World History or AP European History courses. Students will learn about pivotal battles, important dates, and social change throughout the history of the United States. Reading through the text book can seem overwhelming at first, however, if students know how to utilize the study different elements within the book they will have an easier time during the summer and throughout the year. When broken into smaller parts, AP US History can be very manageable, and students will have a better chance at success if they can decode their textbook before the first day of class. 1. The glossary One of the first things students should look at is the glossary at the back of their text book. Students using an online version of their textbook will find it at the bottom of their chapter list. The glossary is a list of all important or unfamiliar terms used throughout the text. If students know how to use the glossary, they will save tons of time because they wont have to search through endless pages looking for a vocab word from the previous week. Additionally, students should be aware that each and every word found within a glossary has been highlighted as important for a reason. These words often appear on quizzes and exams and are used in class discussion (READ: Last Minute AP Study Guide). 2. Timelines throughout the book Most US History textbooks have timelines that appear throughout the book. This is an important element of learning and an opportunity for students to learn about cause and effect as well as historical consequences. For instance, perhaps a small conflict leads to a much larger battle or war; maybe changes in politics lead to economic change. Its essential for students to be able to learn what happened first, second, and third and understand the importance of linear elements in general. Whenever a student comes across a timeline in their book, they should make note of it and record the page so they can refer to it easily in the weeks to come. 3. Chapter introductions Nearly every student will pass over the chapter introduction; however they can be extremely useful. The chapter introduction will let students know what the chapter covers, as well as what it does not, and covers some learning objectives. If students take a couple of minutes to look at their chapter introduction before reading, theyâll know exactly what is going to be introduced, and this will give them a lot of clues about what will be covered in class as well as in at-home assignments. Upon completing the chapter, students are encouraged to look back at the learning objectives and see if they meet some or all of them. Effective Approach for tutoring math by Erwin Salinas Mathematics uses building blocks, meaning it requires mastery of the fundamentals before moving on to advanced concepts thus requiring a certain approach different from History or English. My approach is designed to accommodate different types of learners. I call it the 'concept-details-confirm' approach.Here are two examples of how I used 'concept-details-confirm' approach when tutoring Mathematics in Elementary Math and Calculus I, respectively:Tutoring Elementary Math:One of the most challenging concepts in Elementary math is multiplication. To do multiplication, the student should have mastered addition first. The approach I am going to take when a student is having trouble with multiplication is make them understand the concept first, then show them step-by-step how to multiply. 1.) CONCEPTUnderstanding the concept is important, a student can learn how to multiply using certain techniques, but if they do not know why they are doing it then they will eventually forget after the t est.To make students understand the concept, I will use objects like marbles as visual representation. For example, to represent 3x5 with marbles, I would have 3 SETS OF 5 MARBLES, and I would make the student count it. The total number of marbles from all sets is the answer, which is 15. Then I would have the student represent 4x6 in marbles to get the total number. Once the student understand this concept, he/she can move on to memorizing the multiplication table.2.) DETAILSAfter memorizing the multiplication table, I would now show the student step-by-step how to do one-step multiplication and two-steps or more multiplication. Two-steps multiplication requires mastery of addition.3.) CONFIRMAs I give the student math problems, I would oversee how they do the problems step-by-step, if the student is prone to making mistake in the addition part of two-steps multiplication, then that means the student has not mastered addition, and I would go back and make sure the student masters a ddition using the 'concept-details-confirm' approach. Once the student mastered addition, I would have them correct the mistake they made in two-steps equation. With practice, the student will master two-steps multiplication.Tutoring Calculus I:One of the most challenging concepts in Calculus I is Derivatives. There are many different derivative techniques such as Limit Definition, Product Rule, Quotient Rule, Chain Rule, Impartial differentiation. etc. Before a student can learn these derivative techniques, it is imperative that they have mastered Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus, and understand the derivative concept first. Otherwise, if they do not have the prerequisites math mastered, they will be prone to making small mistakes even if they understand the concept really well. If they do not understand the concept, even if they execute the derivative techniques well, they will most likely forget the material after the exam, which will be detrimental when they tak e Calculus II and higher level math.1.) CONCEPTTo make students understand the derivative concept, I will use concrete world examples. I would use a story and a visual, these would ensure to accommodate all types of learners.To represent the concept of derivative in a story, I would use a car going from home to school. As the driver steps on the gas to go to school, the vehicle accelerates, the rate of which the car velocity is increasing is the derivative. When the driver is reaching a red light, the driver will step on the break decelerating the car, the rate of which the car velocity decreases to stop is also the derivative.To represent the concept of derivative in a visual, I would use two graphs of of the car acceleration, and the car speed. In the acceleration graph, I would have x-coordinate as time and y-coordinate as acceleration. In the velocity graph, I would have x-coordinate as time and y-coordinate as speed. The two graphs is a representation of one car. If the car is accelerating in a constant acceleration say 3 m/s^2, then the velocity of the car is increasing by 3 EACH SECOND.So in this case, the layman's definition of derivative is the rate of how fast and slow is something changing.2.) DETAILSOnce the concept is understood, I would teach the mathematical definition of derivative and theorem of the particular derivative technique they need help, and show step-by-step how to do problems using the particular derivative technique.3.) CONFIRMCalculus problems are not easy to make up, so I would assign 3 total problems from their book (if they have one) and my Calculus I book which I still have, and oversee how they are solving the problems step-by-step. If they got the incorrect answer, I would oversee and analyze their steps. There are two possible causes of wrong answer in Calculus I: Not following the calculus steps properly and/or algebra mistake. If it calculus steps, I would have them correct the steps they got wrong. If it's algebra mistak e, I would analyze what part of algebra they are prone to making mistakes and review that concept of algebra with them using 'concept-details-confirm' approach. Once the student mastered that algebra concept, I would have them correct that algebra mistake they made for their assigned Calculus I problems.Conclusion:Whether it's Elementary Math or Calculus I, Ultimately, I would make sure my clients are one-step ahead of their math class by teaching the future materials in their classes using this approach before my clients learns the material in their classes.

Rather than having all of your responsibilities carefully laid out for you and sticking to them throughout the duration of your internship, you may find that your day-to-day tasks are more likely to change. With fewer people working in the company, you may find that itâs easy to help out members of different departments once in a while. In this way, youâll get a better overview of running a company and the work involved than you might when interning for a bigger company. Relationships Easier to Form Because youâll be working with fewer people, it will probably be easier to get to know your co-workers and to form strong relationships with them. Especially because youâll probably be working with the same people most of the time, youâll be able to get to know them well and to make sure that they know you. If you already have an idea of what department you want to work in after you graduate, this can be a major benefit, as youâll learn a lot about what it takes to pursue a career in that area. In addition, youâll learn many new and useful skills that you can put on your resume in the future. More Networking Possibilities In addition to organizing programs for their interns, bigger companies can also provide you with more opportunities to network. Simply by having a bigger group of employees, youâll get to meet more people. Furthermore, if the company has offices around the United States or the world, having that experience can help you out when applying for jobs in the future. italki Team Language Challenge Week 3 Update The italki team is taking the 2015 New Years Language Challenge How much Chinese can they learn in 20 hours? 3 members of the team at italki are taking the language challenge to improve their skill in Mandarin. Each of them will have 20 hours of lessons between January and February. Can you do better than them? Week 3 Updates Aimé, Intern Week 3 Sadly, I did not meet my goals for this week which was to be able to understand the question my teacher asks me. I still have difficulty trying to understand what she is asking me even when itâs stuff that weâve already went over. I did get in 3 hours of lessons and I did however improve my pronunciation of the words and sentences Iâve already learned though! So 3 weeks in, Iâm not as confident as I was before the challenge started. Although Iâve learned a lot, its way harder than I thought and my listening skills are still terrible. Chinese is really a tough language to learn. Ive done some self-study but really realize I need to do more. Next week Im going to step up my game. Im going to do some more self-study and also put in more hours. I was able to sit down and give a quick update in the video above as well. Go ahead and watch it above! Lastly, I just wanted to say my bets for next week are that Karthik will definitely NOT make his weekly goal! Josie, Services Week 3 This week was tough because I had a bad case of food poisoning and wasnt at work for two days! I was barely able to sit up so studying Chinese was out of the question but I was able to get 3 hours of lessons. What was even better was I was Iâve cleaned up my notes and finally written my vocab words on flashcards. Makes it so much easier for me to revise during my lunch break! For this upcoming week my goal is to practice my vocab everyday and practice using the new words in sentences. My teacher Elena and I are going to review what I have learned so far in the next couple of sessions, so itâs important that I go over all of my cards! Im a bit scared about this upcoming week as well because this weekend I go to Hong Kong, so wonât take lessons then. Iâm scared that I might fall behind! Honestly, Iâm doubting myself at the moment! I still donât feel 100% after my food poisoning and this weekend I know I wonât take lessons so I need to step up my game! Karthik, Data Scientist Week 3 This was a tough week for me as I week I was only able to do 1 hour. I was hoping to put in some hours this weekend but we had to do server maintenance for most of that day and I really wanted to watch our engineering team in action. I was able to really put in some time to work on my pronunciation and grammar so it wasnt a complete waste. I realize that I need to put in some more time for next week. I hope to do 5-6 hours to make up for lost time. Thus far, at this halfway point Iâve only completed 5 hours. Thatâs pretty good for me, but I got to step up in order to finish. So, I need schedule more lessons. One thing that I do have going for me is that I still get to practice speaking occasionally with my co-workers and friends. The duration of this practice is typically less than 1 hour/week so that sort of counts, doesnt it? I still donât feel 100% after my food poisoning and this weekend I know I wonât take lessons so I need to step up my game! Karthik, Data Scientist Week 3 This was a tough week for me as I week I was only able to do 1 hour. I was hoping to put in some hours this weekend but we had to do server maintenance for most of that day and I really wanted to watch our engineering team in action. I was able to really put in some time to work on my pronunciation and grammar so it wasnt a complete waste. I realize that I need to put in some more time for next week. I hope to do 5-6 hours to make up for lost time. Thus far, at this halfway point Iâve only completed 5 hours. Thatâs pretty good for me, but I got to step up in order to finish. So, I need schedule more lessons. One thing that I do have going for me is that I still get to practice speaking occasionally with my co-workers and friends. The duration of this practice is typically less than 1 hour/week so that sort of counts, doesnt it? Im going to kick some butt for week 4!
